Obtaining the kernel module

The ThinkPad ACPI module is included in the Linux kernel (thinkpad-acpi).

Enable fan_control and experimental options

To be able to control your fan and do more sophisticated stuff we need to set some parameters on load time of the module.

Set the following content in the file /etc/modprobe.d/thinkpad-acpi.conf:

options thinkpad-acpi experimental=1 fan_control=1

Reload the module:

# rmmod thinkpad-acpi && modprobe thinkpad-acpi

Now you'll get more options in /proc/acpi/ibm to control ACPI.

Examples

Note: All done in working directory /proc/acpi/ibm.

:::console hl_lines="1 4 5"
# cat fan
status:         enabled
speed:          3051
level:          5
commands:       level <level> (<level> is 0-7, auto, disengaged, full-speed)
commands:       enable, disable
commands:       watchdog <timeout> (<timeout> is 0 (off), 1-120 (seconds))

Set the level of the fan to full speed.

# echo "level full-speed" > fan
